Is Your Smile Game-Ready? How to Prevent (and Handle) Dental Injuries This Season

In Miami, when the weather warms up, weekends fill quickly with beach volleyball, soccer at Tropical Park, or skating along Ocean Drive. It’s the perfect time to stay active – but while you’re thinking sunscreen and sneakers, don’t forget to protect your teeth too. Miami Smile Dental is here to help you stay prepared.

Whether you're diving into contact sports or just chasing your kids around, accidents happen. A little planning goes a long way, and knowing what to do can help you avoid long-term dental problems.

What To Do in a Dental Emergency

Tooth knocked out?

  • Try to place the tooth back in the socket. If not, hold it in your cheek or store it in milk.
  • Handle by the crown, not the root.
  • Rinse gently, no scrubbing.
  • Call your dentist right away. Time is critical.

Broken tooth?

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Use an ice pack for swelling.
  • Avoid aspirin, opt for ibuprofen.
  • See your dentist as soon as possible. Here's what to expect.

Suspect a broken jaw?

  • Use a cold compress to control swelling.
  • Head to the ER or call us immediately.

Soft tissue injuries (cheeks, lips, tongue, gums)?

  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Apply pressure with gauze or cloth.
  • Go to the ER if bleeding doesn’t stop.

Bitten tongue or lip?

  • Clean gently.
  • Use a cold compress.
  • If bleeding persists, get medical help.

Emergency kit to keep on hand:

  • Dentist’s phone number (and emergency line)
  • Saline or clean water
  • Gauze or cloth
  • Small container with a lid for a lost tooth

Want Fewer Emergencies? Get a Mouthguard That Fits

Dental injuries are one of the most common sports-related issues, especially during high-impact games. Mouthguards protect your teeth, lips, jaw, and tongue.

Here are your options:

  • Stock mouthguards: Pre-formed and cheap, but often uncomfortable.
  • Boil-and-bite: Better fit, but not always durable.
  • Custom-fitted: Designed by your dentist, these offer the best comfort, fit, and protection. A custom mouthguard is especially useful for kids or anyone wearing braces.

Clean your mouthguard regularly with cool water and soap. Replace it if it’s torn or worn out.
